Hello friends of Matta's!

Welcome to our Matta's blog! The purpose of this blog is to keep you informed about the building of our NEW Matta's Restaurant. We are so excited about this venture.

Let us assure you that no one was as sadly affected than we were about the closing of our beloved Matta's Restaurant on Main Street; however, we hope you will join us while we create memories in our new location at Mesa Riverview. This new location is a wonderful opportunity to be close to the convenient 202 and be a part of the Mesa Riverview community. By all means, hold on to your fond memories of the old Matta's and contact us with any fun stories you would like to share. We can't wait to hear why you love Matta's. And don't be surprised if your story shows up on our website.

I'm so glad to hear you are building a new restaurant. As a customer since the beginning of time (haha), I was sad, mad, and otherwise totally distressed when you closed the Main Street location.

When I was a child, my parents would take the family to Matta's for every special occasion. One fun memory is that of my brothers fighting over the little bottle of chili peppers that used to grace the tables as an appetizer. With 3 of them, the chiles didn't last long, so the brothers would take the empty bottle, and trade it for a full one on another table.

As an adult, our family still got together at least twice a year at Matta's. It has always been one of our most enjoyable family traditions. I'm looking forward to being able to renew this tradition, when the new facility is opened.

Will the new restaurant have the beloved 3 soft tacos? It had been a mainstay of my diet for over forty years. My grandparents were one of the first to visit Matta's when it was across the road. They as well as my parents saw the new location built on Main. I myself watched the changes to the place over the years. We watched the tile replace the carpet, saw the additons to the west and patio. It had always been a great family tradition to go there and meet there. When it closed I felt a piece of me had vanished. Great new to here it is being reborn. I hope the flavors and passion returns.

Dave....one of the few born natives still around.

As a child my family went to Mattas all the time. My wife and I went to Mattas on our first date. We were married on May 5th, Cinco de Mayo, and returned each year for our anniversary, plus all the times in between. We tryied to get in on closing night, but the crowd was to large. We went to the Mattas grill. We were excited to see the old boths from the downtwon store there the last time we went. Can't wait for the new place. I already know waht I will order. A chilli relleno and a Roberts taco...maybe two. :)

My family has been going to Mattas since the mid 1950's. We always send a postcard to a family member who didn't come with us just to make them jealous. I ALWAYS order a Number 4. I can't wait until the new Mattas opens up. We will be there opening day, I promise.
Warm regards, Larry S.

Marc and I are both Mesa natives and both grew up on S. Miller St. Both families ate at Matta's from the time it opened. After we got married and had kids, we took them to Matta's. Now they take their kids to the Higley Matta's. We look forward to the new one opening. We miss the downtown Matta's!

I am proud to say that my children are third generation Matta's fans! We still do a sad sigh every time we drive down Main Street and see the building. On the first night it was closed, we were tempted to find the lady who was always outside selling flowers, buy all of her flowers from her and lay them at the front door of Matta's, like you would do for the passing of a beloved friend. I can't wait to see the new restaurant open!

LONG LIVE LOUIE'S AND THE SANDY SPECIAL!!

Third generation fan with little 4th generation fans here. I was so excited to show my own little ones the fountain and give them their coins to throw in since that was a favorite for me.

Nothing like the chips and hot sauce to be found at Mattas, amongst other things.

I grew up in Mesa and Matta's was always the restaurant we went to whenever we had anything to celebrate. We ate there at least once a month when we would visit the Mormon temple. When I got my mission call we ate there to celebrate. When I came home from my mission we ate there to celebrate. When my wife and I got engaged we ate there to celebrate. When our daughter got engaged we ate there to celebrate. When our son got his mission call we ate there to celebrate. When he returned from his mission, Mattas had closed and we had to start a tradition somewhere else. We're looking forward to your new location as well. Other than a lifetime of family traditions celebrating at Mattas, the three things I liked best were the Sandy's Specials, the Chunky hot sauce, and hearing the Mariachis play their guitars and sing. I hope you have all three in your new location!

Originally from the East coast, Mattas was my first experience with Mexican food and it has been downhill from there. Love the Ground beef soft tacos and the Sandy's special. Thanks for reviving the restaurant. Where in the Riverview will it be located?

I too have VERY fond memories of Mattas. When my Grandparents were dating, my Grandpa brought my very first fix of Matta's to his house for our family. Growing up in Pinetop it was always a rush for me to visit because that meant I got to be with our beautiful family and enjoy amazing food! I remember as a kid walking through the back door seeing my Uncles and Grandpa cooking away, Sophie giving me huges and kisses, my Aunt serving and making people laugh, my other Aunt looking stunning as always up front greeting, my Grandma bouncing from one room to the next...greeting, making drinks, serving, you name it,(I loved watching her spin napkins in the bar to look pretty, I do it now). We always loved to sit in the bar, I could almost guarantee my Great Grandma Garza would be there watching my Uncle sing or cheering on the Suns. I also got my love for Miss PacMan there, my Uncle would rack up the credits for my brother and I! But best of all, it was about being with family!

I'm so excited for the new location and can't wait to make more memories with my family! Thank you for all your hard work to create a place people hold dear to their hearts!

Love you!
Jessica

Hi, I'm Donald Higgins and I can remember eating at Matta's When Mr. Matta cooked in the kitchen of a converted house on East Main (across the street from the old Matta's) and Mrs. Matta did the serving. Acutally I think they traded off most of the time. My wife lived on N. Emmerson in 1955 and 56 and would baby-sit the Matta kids now and then. Her parents and the Matta's were friends. Over the years we have spent many meals there and lots of celebrations. As the Agriculture Teacher at Mesa High School from 1981 to 2000 I took the FFA Officer team when ever the State officers came to visit our FFA chaper.I'm glad that you are building a new one.

Thanks again,
Don

Happy memories of watching the Matta kids grow up and have families of their own, at least 2 of the same waitresses still serving until their own retirement, Mr. Matta going from table to table greeting everyone, the fabulous original Matta's hot sauce (which can thankfully now be purchased by the bottle to take home), our family's favorite #4 combination, and my own personal favorite is a side of Mexican rice with green pepper sauce. Best wishes for fabulous success at your NEW location, Dianne

I am a very long time fan of Mattas. My Mother Pam used to bowl with Mr Matta back in the 70's. We ate at Mattas at least once a week. I moved out of state and when ever a trip to the valley came up. I always stopped at the old location. I would buy a few of the largest bags of chips and way back when I would buy the gallon jugs of the hot sauce.

The Chimi with green sauce and sour cream and guac. I have lived in many states and you guys just ruined me. If it's not Mattas I'm not eating it.

I know live in Sarasota Florida. They have no clue as to what Mexican food is. I only get back once a year if I am lucky now and I did stop in at the new store and bought a case of hot sauce.

Thank you for shipping it as well. Now if you could just ship the chips...

Back to Mr Matta. I remember he always sat at the last booth next to the kitchen. I remember as a kid you got a soda in a glass bottle. The little carts moving the food and the worlds best cheese crisp.

If you ever want or buil a store in Florida please let me know...

Thank you for the best Mexican food in the valley. The best Hot Sauce and Margaritta Mix shipped in the world!.

I also Thank You from My family to you for the memories you have provided not only my family. But all the people who grew up with the Mattas...

My husband spent his childhood eating at Matta's and introduced it to me in the early 80's when we started dating. We traveled all the way from North Peoria almost every weekend. We were sick when we made the long journey only to find they had closed the doors. I actually cried.
Next to the best food in the valley, our two favorite memories of Matta's was Martha and the hot salsa. We couldn't wait to hear her say "Petsi". There will never be anyone like her.

Thank you Matta's for all of the wonderful memories and we hope there will be many more to come at the new location.

May God Bless you!

I used to live in Mesa, and would always go to Matta's on Main Street.
I moved to Indiana in 2003, and was very sad when I read that the Main street location had closed, but now I can barely hold in my excitement. Is the Chile Relleno still going to be on the menu? That was my favorite dish.
Thank you so much for coming back!

Thank you for building a new Matta's! Nothing will compare to the old one as we have so many memories there. Please build a water fountain as that was one of our tradtions. My Mother or Grandparents would give me a penny after we ate and we would go and make a "wish' and throw the penny in the fountain. Thank you for all the great food!

Growing up on Matta's food (loved the Robert's Tacos by-the-way)I never new I was pronouncing the name wrong until I got married, and my husband told me it wasn't MATT US it was MOTT US. Well, when you say something wrong a thousand times it is hard to change your ways...needless to say, I am corrected every time I say it. However, your slogan "I've been Mattafied" made a lot more sense when I learned the right way to say it. Your restaurant held many fond memories for me and my family growing up...and we can't seem to find a restaurant to go to that comes close to replacing you. Thanks for the good times. I look forward to your new restaurant!
